Appointment of legal heir

Whether affidavit in front of notary will suffice the purpose of legal heir certificate. So that the applicant can file return of his deceased father

Not at all. One should get the succession certificate from the collector of the district or SDM from the sub-divisional magistrate. Simply notarizing the affidavit one cannot justify himself or herself as legal heir.

No. Following documents are valid for proof of legal heir. 1. Legal heir certificate issued by court of law/local revenue authority 2. Surviving member certificate issued by local revenue authority 3. Registered will 4. Letter issued by bank or financial institutions on their letter head with official seal and signature mentioning details of nominee or joint account holder in the account if deceased at the time of demise.
